Cafeteria Makeover Warms Lunchtime
Lexington Middle School’s Nutrition Director Amelia Holland described the school’s cafeteria as having a “dark, dingy, institutional look.” She and the district enlisted the help of The Vomela Companies, along with Pro Team Foodservice Advisors to “create an inviting and warm space for students during meal service.”
Understanding that the lunchroom is a fun place for students to gather, take a break, and eat, the design team set out to create an engaging cafe atmosphere that also inspired students to be their best.
To bring energy and a sense of optimism to the space, the designers chose a light color palette. From there, they created a youthful vibe and visual interest using a mix of striped patterns, geometric textures, and hand-drawn foods. To bring in a bright pop of color and a gentle reminder of the nutritious meal choices available, they added color photography of real food. Inspiring words were incorporated into wall murals to encourage and emphasize student achievement and success.
In addition, the team covered the windows with 3M™ Scotchcal clear view graphic film as a safety measure that still lets in a lot of light. They also designed magnetic panels for flyers, notices, and posters.
The lighter, brighter, more fun cafeteria ambiance was a hit with students. In fact, Lexington Middle School noted a 2.5% increase in breakfast participation one month after completing the makeover.
“The design was clean and nurturing. The team had great advice and customer service was excellent.”
